Origin Story

Founded in 1972 as BMW Motorsport GmbH, this division was established to facilitate BMW's motorsport activities. The first vehicle to bear the M badge was the BMW M1, a mid-engine sports car introduced in 1978, which helped establish BMW M as a performance leader.
